Winter Wonderland in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains

Winter is officially right around the corner in Santa Fe, with night-time temperatures dipping below freezing and the first snow on the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.  Guests at Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn are enjoying snuggling under thick down comforters and relaxing in front of the fireplaces in their rooms and the inn's welcoming Great Room.

After a warming breakfast at the inn, guests have just a short drive to gain access to winter fun at the Santa Fe Ski Basin, cross country skiing on one of the many trails off the Ski Basin Road, sledding, hiking or simply building snowmen and making angels in the soft, powdery snow.  It is a winter wonderland up there.

After a day in the snow, put your feet up in front of the crackling fire, sip a glass of wine, and get down to the serious task of figuring out where to experience some fine Santa Fe dining.

It oozes up from the ground, it blankets us from above, it surrounds us in beauty and light.  These photos were taken from The Cross of the Martyrs, about 100 yards from the Hacienda Nicholas' front door. Does life get any better than this? I never tire of this place - it is constantly changing, consistently beautiful, and it always soothes my restless cowboy soul.)
