Super Sale at Spirit of the Earth

This is one of my favorite stores in Santa Fe and I highly recommend it  to guests of The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn seeking a unique shopping experience.  Spirit of the Earth, owned and operated by Tony and Gayatri Malmet, more than meets this criteria.  Tony creates a line of stunning contemporary jewelry, while Gayatri designs the Spirit of the Earth Apparel Collection, an exquisite collection of flowing and feminine designs.  This boutique has some of the most luscious velvets, sandwashed silks and seuded rayons I have ever seen.  You can create a memorable look with one of Gayatri's gorgeous tops, a necklace by Tony and a simple pair of jeans.

For added appeal, there is now a terrific sale at Spirit of the Earth, with many items at 20-70% off.  If you are looking for something both beautiful and unusual, head straight over to Spirit of the Earth.  You won't be disappointed.

Ukrainian Easter Egg Dying in February?

Yes, Santa Fe truly is the City Different, so we try to inform our guests at The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn of as many interesting events as possible.  For example, where else would you be able to see, for FREE no less, a demonstration on the making of Ukrainian Easter Eggs?  Also known as pysanka, the eggs are decorated using a wax-resis (batik) method.  The designs are not painted on, as one would think, but are written on the eggs using beeswax.  Using tradtional Ukrainian folk designs, the eggs are very intricate and brightly colored.  In ancient times, the eggs were decorated with nature symbols and were important parts of spring rituals.  Today people collect these eggs for display year 'round, but particularly over the Easter holidays.

This demonstration of Pysanka is presented by Susan's Christmas Shop and will take place on Saturday, February 26th from 1-4pm.  While you may well want to visit Susan's Christmas Shop after the event, the actual demonstration will take place at The Coronado Room of the La Fonda Hotel, right on the Santa Fe Plaza.

And Now, For Something Completely Different

Visitors to The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn are typically in Santa Fe to view the Southwestern Art scene for which we are known.  Here is an opportunity for something completely different - a fascinating lecture on "The Art of the Aloha Shirt" at the Museum of International Folk Art.  This museum is known for its eclectic exhibits, from an exhibit on beds from around the world to the attire of African chiefs.  Perhaps that is why it is my favorite museum in town.

This lecture,  given by Dr. Linda Boynton Arthur, is presented in conjunction with the current exhibition, Material World: Textiles & Dress From the Collection.  Come and learn the history and meaning of the beloved Aloha Shirt, this Sunday, February 20, at 2pm.  The lecture is free with museum admission.  Heads up New Mexicans - entrance is free on Sundays with valid I.D.

Tired of Green Chile? Go Greek!

Our hot breakfast entrees at The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn often center around Southwestern cuisine - Breakfast Enchiladas, Blue Corn Pinon Waffles, Roasted Poblanos with Quinoa and Chipotle Sauce, etc.  While many visitors to Santa Fe take great delight in having red and/or green chile for breakfast, lunch and dinner, there are plenty who are happy to have a break.  While it may seem counter intuitive, we do have a couple of really tasty Greek/Mediterranean style restaurants in Santa Fe.

My favorite is The Pyramid Cafe, serving tasty gyros with tzatziki sauce, creamy hummus, flaky spanakopita and flavorful tabouli.  Word has it that their lamb gyros and other grilled meats are truly succulent, though they also have an extensive selection of vegetarian dishes.  Entrees range from about $10-14 each.  Bordering on a dive-look, the place is actually quite cozy and welcoming once you get inside..  Just don't expect a lot from the decor.  That being said, the food is really fresh and the staff is very friendly and accommodating.  If you are able, plan your dinner to coincide with the belly dancers who appear at The Pyramid the second Friday of every month.

14th Annual Art Feast of Santa Fe

Guests of The Hacienda Nicholas Bed and Breakfast Inn will want to participate in the 14th annual ARTFeast, an extravaganza of art, food, wine, homes and fashion that is one of Santa Fe's most popular winter events.  Proceeds from the weekend's seven events benefit art programs for the Santa Fe Public Schools.

Of particular interest to our guests will be the Edible Art Tour, the Art of Homes tour and final event of the weekend, The Artist's Champagne Brunch.

The Edible Art Tour (EAT) begins at 5pm on Friday, February 25.  Thirty top Santa Fe art galleries along Canyon Road pair up with the city's top chefs and restaurateurs to offer great art and culinary delights.  Since the Hacienda Nicholas is so close to Canyon Road, I would recommend leaving your car and walking on over.

As many out of town visitors are interested in Santa Fe's unique architectural style, Saturday's house tour is a great opportunity to see some of the city's grand estates.  This is a self-guided tour of homes selected by Santa Fe Properties.  Showcased in these homes is artwork chosen by a number of Santa Fe galleries.  This event is free!

The final event of ARTFeast is the Artists' Champagne Brunch at Bishop's Lodge, a beautiful and historic resort just outside of Santa Fe.  Enjoy delicious food and a chance to bid on the sculptures, paintings and jewelry of twenty Santa Fe artists as well as travel packages, spa  treatments, restaurant meals and more.

Ticket prices range from $15-$100 per event and may be purchased online at artfeast.com or by calling 505.603.4643..

Fresh Powder Plus Blue Skies Equals Pure Fun

Picture yourself in front of the over sized fireplace at The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn, sipping a glass of wine and warming your toes after a fun-filled day on the slopes of the Santa Fe Ski Basin.

We have just experienced a couple of winter storms, dropping some of the fluffiest powder you could ever imagine.  The storms have passed and we will be reaching our normal daytime winter temperatures of 30's and 40's - downright tropical after the recent bitter cold!  With 91% of the mountain open, Santa Fe is the perfect destination for skiers and snowboarders of beginning to intermediate skills.  Half day adult passes are $45, while a whole day is $60 - great value for skiing in the Rockies.  There are reduced rates for children and seniors.

For those of you who may not want to ski all day, every day, Santa Fe offers a variety of activities to enjoy.  The shops are offering bargains on everything from jewelry to furniture, our restaurants are serving some very well-priced three course meals and the sun is shining!  Of course there is also our own Absolute Nirvana Spa, for a massage and fireside bath in a tub filled with the petals of a dozen red roses.

Valentine's Dinner with Panache

The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn is a popular destination spot for those seeking a romantic getaway in Santa Fe, especially around Valentine's Day.  Many guests are drawn also to our spa, Absolute Nirvana, where they can have a massage as well as a soak in a tub filled with the petals of a dozen red roses, a fire burning at their feet, nibbling on tropical fruits and chocolates, sipping hot Javanese ginger tea.

After your spa treatment, may I suggest a dinner at Ze French Bistro.  France is synonymous with romance so what better way to keep that amorous mood going than an authentic French dinner.  This one will also be easy on your wallet, which is not always the case with French cuisine.  Ze French Bistro is offering a three course meal for just $35.  Menu selections are:

Appetizers:
Smoked Salmon with Blinis and cape creme fraiche OR
Fresh bruschetta and mozzarella on whole wheat bread

Entrees:
Stuffed dover sole "vol au vent" with baby vegetables OR
Baked Atlantic salmon and Champagne beurre blanc OR
Grilled beef tenderloin, "Bearnaise" or "au poivre"

Desserts:
Decadent Heart-shaped Chocolate Fondant with fresh raspberries OR
Peach and Pear Melba ice cream Sundae "a deux" with chocolate syrup, roasted almonds and whipped cream.

This combination of spa and dinner would certainly make for a memorable Valentine's Day.

Ice Carving on the Plaza

We have just come through record-breaking cold temperatures in Santa Fe but now the sun is shining, the skies are blue, and temperatures will reach 36 degrees today!  It will still be plenty cold enough for guests of The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn to enjoy the upcoming Ice Carving Contest on the Santa Fe Plaza.

The event will take place on Monday, February 21 from noon to 4:00, in conjunction  with the Santa Fe Winter Fiesta. Competitors will be given a single block of ice to carve, with the first prize winner getting $500, second place receiving $250, and third place getting $150.  All prize monies will be donated the winners' favorite charity, in their name.  If you are an ice-carver, you may contact the organizers of the Santa Fe Winter Fiesta to register.  If not, the event great fun for spectators.  Grab a cup of hot chocolate from the Haagen-Dazs on the corner of the Plaza and head over to be part of the excitement.

The Santa Fe Winter Fiesta is a 10 day event, running from 2/18 - 2/27, filled with special winter activities and special deals being offered by local businesses.  The skiing will be fabulous and there will be much fun to be had in Santa Fe during this time period.

Country Tunes on a Saturday Night

With its authentic Santa Fe adobe architecture and decor, The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn tends to attract guests who love all things southwestern.  We often play the music of local musicians during the breakfast hour, but here is a chance to hear some live country music by guitarist/songwriter Chuck Pyle.  He will be performing on Saturday, February 5th at 7:30pm at the Santa Fe Performance Exchange.  The venue is actually just outside of Santa Fe in the village of Eldorado, about a 20 minute drive from the Plaza.

Chuck Pyle, also known as "The Zen Cowboy", has delighted audiences for the past 40 years with his sophisticated songwriting, impeccable guitar licks, humor and honesty.  Pyle, whose songs have been recorded by the likes of John Denver, Jerry Jeff Walker and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, will have you humming and toe-tapping before you know it.

Tickets are $15 if purchased in advance, and $17 at the door.  You may get tickets by calling 505.988.1234 or online at TicketsSantaFe.org.
