New Year's Turtle Dances at Taos Pueblo

Guests of The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn come from around the world to learn about the area's Native American culture and history.  A terrific opportunity to experience this heritage first-hand presents itself on New Year's Day with the Turtle Dances at the nearby Taos Pueblo.  This pueblo, designated as both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark, has been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years.

The Taos Pueblo, famous for its drums and micaceous pottery, is fiercely independent in spirit.  Residents continue to speak the unwritten Tiwa language, and are committed to integrating the traditional way of life with the realities of existing in the modern world.  A day trip to this fascinating pueblo is a high on the list of things to do while in Santa Fe, and to be there during a ceremonial dance is an added treat.

The dances are scheduled to begin on January 1, 2012 around 8am, though this is only an approximate time.  Please note that no cameras or cell phones are allowed during this blessing ritual, which carries deep cultural significance to the community of the Taos Pueblo.  Please behave with utmost respect and consideration, much as you would in a church.

Christmas Feasting in Santa Fe

Repeat guests of The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn know that Santa Fe abounds with fabulous restaurants, though many are closed on Christmas Day.  Nonetheless, there are some great options, and many of the city's larger hotels are open and serving bountiful holiday feasts.  You will want to make your reservations as soon as possible, as seating is limited.

My first choice for either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day Dinner would be Restaurant Martin.  Theirs is an innovative and deliciously-prepared and presented menu, with a wide array of seafood, poultry, meats and vegetarian options in an simple but elegant setting.  Christmas Eve dinner begins at 5:30pm, and Christmas Day service begins at 1pm.

I would also recommend The Compound Restaurant for either Christmas Eve Dinner (located on Canyon Road, so very well-situated for those wanting to participate in the Farolito Walk) or Christmas Day.  Their Christmas Eve service begins at 4pm, with a three course prix-fixe dinner for $125.  Christmas Dinner is served from 5pm on, with an a la carte menu featuring Compound favorites along with turkey dinner and all the trimmings.

Another great choice would be Fuego at La Posada, located just one block from the inn.  Christmas Eve dinner will be available from 5:30-9pm, with the same menu available on Christmas Day from 3pm-8pm for $75/person.
