Marimba Madness in Santa Fe

Greg, the 'cowboy' innkeeper at Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn, keeps the tunes flowing throughout the breakfast hour.  Good music plus fantastic southwestern food is a great way to start the day in Santa Fe.  For more fun music, check out the Santa Fe Marimba Festival, a four-day event beginning on Wednesday, June 6.

The Marimba Festival opens at 7pm on June 6 with "Marimba Music From Around the World", and then "Contemporary Classical Marimba" on June 7 - both events at 7 pm at the St. Francis Auditorium.  Ticket prices for the St. Francis Auditorium concerts are just $15 each.

The marimba concerts continue at The Lensic Performing Arts Center with "Double Image", featuring mallet percussionists Dave Samuels and David Friedman on June 8 at 8pm, and end with the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra and guests marimbists at 6pm on June 9.  Tickets for the Lensic concerts range in price from $20-50.

Tickets for all Santa Fe Marimba Festival concerts may be purchased online at ticketssantafe.org or by calling 505.988.1234.

14,000 Years of Art in New Mexico

Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn guests often make galleries and museums a mainstay of their Santa Fe vacations.  The new exhibit at the New Mexico Museum of Art, "It's About Time:  14,000 Years of Art in New Mexico", promises to be an impressive view of the state's art through the ages.

Featuring 120 works from Native American, Hispanic American and European American traditions, the exhibit demonstrates how these three cultures have always had a strong influence on one another, and how the art itself has been strongly influenced by changing world views, technology, culture and spirituality.   On view will be a wide range of art, from 14,000 year old Paleo-Indian tools to the contemporary abstract imagery of Agnes Martin and Judy Chicago.  This ambitious display of art in New Mexico serves to deepen our understanding of the region's diverse cultures, and to illuminate the evolution of mankind in general.

The exhibit, which opened on May 11, 2012, will be on display through January 2014.

After spending time relaxing in the garden patio of Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn, guests are often inspired to purchase a trunk load of xeriscape plants for their own gardens back home.  We generally recommend Santa Fe Greenhouses, voted Santa Fe's Best Nursery for 13 years in a row now!

Another option is the Spring Plant Sale, presented by the Santa Fe Botanical Garden this Saturday, May 12 from 8am-2pm.   Beautify your garden with perennials, grasses, trees and shrubs while also supporting this terrific organization.  Santa Fe Botanical Garden is a non-profit dedicated to preserving the rich botanical heritage and biodiversity of the Santa Fe area.  For twenty-five years they have been working diligently to restore the 35 acre Leonora Wetland Preserve at Rancho de las Golondrinas, as well as the 1,350-acre Ortiz Mountains Education Preserve.

Next on their agenda is the creation of a Santa Fe Botanical Garden at Museum Hill.  Clearly this is an organization worthy of our support.

Civil War Reenactment at Rancho de las Golondrinas

The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn is a historic adobe home which is especially captivating to history buffs.  This weekend's Civil War Reenactment at Rancho de las Golondrinas will be equally fascinating for lovers of history.  Rancho de las Golondrinas (Ranch of the Swallows) is a living history museum just south of Santa Fe, dating back to the early 1700's.  Along with the annual events such as the Harvest Festival, Wine Festival and Herb & Lavender Fair, the ranch puts on a Civil War Reenactment featuring military drills, living examples of battle zone camp life, educational lectures and demonstrations, as well as actual reenactments of actual Civil War battles that took place in New Mexico.   As 2012 is the 150th anniversary of the state's Civil War battles, the event will be even more elaborate than ever.

Ticket prices are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and teens.  The event is free for children under age 12.
