Annie Leibowitz at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

Every day guests depart from the Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn on their way to explore the art and inspiration behind the work of Georgia O'Keeffe.  From very limited tours of O'Keeffe's home in Abique to visiting the O'Keeffe Museum, just four blocks from the inn, to hiking around O'Keeffe country, Santa Fe is a great place to learn more about this beloved American artist.

In conjunction with the museum's ongoing "Georgia O'Keeffe and The Farway: Nature and Imagine," is a new exhibit: "Annie Leibovitz: Pilgrimage".  Organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and running through May 5, 2013, these 64 photos are unusual for Leibovitz in that they are not staged studio portraits.  Rather, they capture a profound sense of place, whether a landscape (Niagara Falls, Walden Pond, Yosemite Valley) or the home of a well-known person (O'Keeffe, Elvis Presley, Ralph Waldo Emerson).  Indeed, Leibovitz took two trips to New Mexico, photographing both O'Keeffe's home in Abiquiu as well as the landscape of Ghost Ranch.

Director of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Rob Kret, chose to feature Leibovitz's Pilgrimage because it "truly commemorates and compliments the ongoing 'Georgia O'Keeffe and the Faraway: Nature and Image' exhibition with paintings and photographs of O'Keeffe's most beloved and inspiring locations in the Southwest."  Kret makes the case that both women were successful in capturing the profound depth power and emotion that connects us to certain surroundings, allowing us to feel a deep sense of place.

Seeing the work of these two gifted artists in simultaneous exhibits is a real treat, and will afford the viewer a deeper appreciation of both perspectives.

Santa Fe's Remarkable Art Feast

Guests of The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn flock to Santa Fe for a myriad of reasons, with art and cuisine being particularly alluring. During the upcoming ARTfeast, running from February 22-24, 2013, you will be immersed in a weekend of fabulous food, beautiful art by renowned Santa Fe artists, house tours, golfing and high fashion - adding to the fun is the knowledge that all the proceeds from this weekend extravaganza are donated to fund a great cause.

It may hard to believe that Santa Fe, a city with such a solid foundation in the arts, experiences a profound lack of funding for arts in its schools, yet such is the case.  ARTfeast began in 1998 as an attempt to address this shortfall when a few galleries began asking for donations during their Friday night openings.  Since then the program has grown tremendously and has raised over one million dollars to help fund art classes in Santa Fe's public schools.

The highlight of the weekend is the Edible Art tour, a collaboration of forty top Canyon Road galleries with over forty of Santa Fe's best restaurants and caterers, each showcasing their most noteworthy talents.  This presentation of fine food and art will take place on Friday, February 22, from 5-8pm.  Tickets are $35 each if purchased in advance, and $40 if purchased on the day of the event.

Other events include Friday's Art of Fashion: Runway Show & Luncheon ($100/ticket), the Free Art of Home Tour offered on Saturday and Sunday, and Sunday's Artist's Champagne Brunch and Auction taking place at Hotel Santa Fe for $75/person.

Valentine's Day in Santa Fe - Dining Specials

Santa Fe's Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn is a wonderful place to spend Valentine's Day.  The  private courtyard suites, all with thick adobe walls, fireplaces and king beds, are especially recommended for a romantic getaway.

Many of our guests also take advantage of our Romance Packages, which include a couples massage and luxurious rose petal bath at our Absolute Nirvana Spa.  Imagine you and your sweetheart receiving side-by-side massages in a candlelit room, followed by a luxuriating bath in a hand-carved granite tub filled with the petals of 2 dozen red roses, a fire burning at your feet, as you sip Javanese ginger tea and nibble on tropical fruits with homemade chocolate truffles.

While we serve a full southwestern breakfast, you will want to choose from among Santa Fe's many fine dining establishments for your Valentine's Day dinner.  A number of Santa Fe restaurants are offering special Valentine's Day Menus this year.  Among these, my top picks for a romantic dinner this Valetine's are 315 Restaurant & Wine Bar, Luminaria at Inn of Loretto and the Old House at The Eldorado.

315 Restaurant & Wine Bar is a top choice for Francophiles who will appreciate its classic French bistro menu and intimate setting.  This Valentine's they are offering a three course dinner for $55/person, served from 5-9pm.  Appetizers include choices such as French Onion Soup Gratinee, Seared Fois Gras and Coquilles Saint Jacques.  Entrees includes Seared Duck Breast "Coq au Vin", Bouillabaisse and Osso Bucco, among others.  Save room for one of their fabulous homemade desserts - flourless chocolate cake, profiteroles or creme brûlée! Call them at 505.986.9190 for reservations.

Luminaria, located at Inn of Loretto, is offering a four course selection, with each course paired with a carefully chosen wine.  While they offer no options in their set menu, the idea of starting with the "Introduction" (Seared Scallops), then "The Courting" (Portabella Ravioli), followed by "The Engagement" (Grilled Filet of Beef) and ending with "Happily Ever After" (Tangerine Bavarian with Blood Orange Pudding) is quite clever.   This menu is priced at $75/person, including the wine pairings.  Reservations may be made by calling them at 505.984.7915.

The Eldorado Hotel's Old House Restaurant has put together an "Aphrodisiac Menu", priced at $119/couple, or $149/couple with wine pairings.  The menu begins with a Seafood Sampler to share with your beloved, including oysters on the half shell, crispy fried oysters and seared raw tuna.  This is followed by a choice of Asparagus Soup or a Sweetheart Salad of baby spinach, arugula, avocado, figs and pine nuts.  Main course selections include a Petite Filet & Lobster Tail or Pan Seared Scallops or a Chile Rubbed New York Steak.  Finish your meal of love with Passion Fruit Creme Brûlée, Warm Bittersweet Chocolate Cake or a Strawberry Mascarpone Tart.  Call them at 505.995.4530 for reservations.

Fine Dining Deal in Santa Fe

Guests of The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn will want to take advantage of the great winter dining deals now offered at Santacafe, one of Santa Fe's most treasured restaurants.  Santacafe is taking a page out of the playbook of La Boca, another of my favorite Santa Fe restaurants, by offering half price appetizers Monday through Friday evenings from 4:30-6:30pm.  Try their famous calamari - flash fried with a fantastic 4 chile dipping sauce, along with their famous classic dumplings and spring rolls.  Their Happy Hour Special also features wines by the glass, an array of cocktails and their House Margaritas, all for just $5.

In addition to the Happy Hour Special, Santacafe is now offering a 3-Course Dinner Special on Sunday through Thursday nights, beginning at 5:30pm.  Santacafe is located in an historic adobe compound where one can dine by candlelight in one of four intimate dining rooms.  The restaurant is known for its creative and contemporary southwestern cuisine, with a menu extensive enough to please everyone in your group.

An Evening of Blues Music in Santa Fe

Just six blocks from The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn is Santa Fe's historic Lensic Theater, an architectural jewel hosting world-class music, dance and theatrical events throughout the year.  Coming up on Saturday, February 9th, is a performance by West African superstar Habib Koite together with New York bluesman Eric Bibb, collaborating for a memorable evening of transatlantic blues.  Blending Mali's rich and diverse traditions with the legacy of American blues, gospel and folk, they create a sensational and seamless fusion of world music.  The New York Times writes, "[Koite's] reputation as a guitar player has become almost mythical, combining rock and classical techniques with Malian tunings..."  The two have been touring the globe, so it quite a treat to have the opportunity to see them right here in Santa Fe.

Get your tickets online at or by calling 505.988.1234.  Ticket prices range from $19-$39.
