64th Annual Santa Fe Rodeo

Guests come to The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn year 'round to experience the unique blend of cultures found in Santa Fe. The city's population consists of Native Americans, descendants of the Spanish conquistadors and Anglos, with festivals taking place throughout the year to honor the history and traditions of each culture.  Along with the Santa Fe Indian Market and the bi-annual Spanish Market is the Rodeo de Santa Fe, now in its 64th year.

Kicking off the rodeo is downtown Santa Fe Rodeo Parade, beginning at 10am on Saturday, June 15.  The rodeo itself takes place from June 19-22 at the Santa Fe Rodeo Grounds, on the outskirts of town.  Rodeo de Santa Fe is one of the top 60 PRCA Rodeos in the country, drawing World Champion cowboys such as Taos Muncy, Trevor Brazile and JW Harris.  The excitement includes bull riding, bareback and saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing and roping events, along with Mutton Bustin' and the crowning of the Rodeo Queen - fun for all ages.  Besides the action in the arena, you may also enjoy the beer garden and carnival midway.

Tickets are $17-$27 for adults and $10 for children and seniors, and may be purchased by calling 505.988.1234 or online at

Superb New Exhibit at Santa Fe's Wheelwright Museum

The Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn is a top choice for visitors seeking to experience authentic Southwestern architecture and ambiance.  Like all travelers coming to Santa Fe, they make a point of going to the city's top rate museums to see traditional Native American weavings, pottery, beadwork, baskets and paintings.  Santa Fe boasts two fabulous museums featuring antique Native American Indian art:  The Wheelwright Museum and the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, both on Museum Hill.

A noteworthy new exhibit has just opened at The Wheelwright - The Durango Collection: Native American Weaving in the Southwest, 1860-1880.  This exhibit will run through April 13, 2014.  The complete Durango Collection is held by the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, and features 800 years of weaving in the Southwest.  The Wheelwright has chosen to showcase a small portion of this vast collection, allowing you to feast your eyes on some truly exceptional one-of-a-kind textiles, rugs, shawls and mantas woven by Pueblo, Navajo and Hispanic weavers.

The Wheelwright is open seven days a week and admission is free.  You can support their endeavors by patronizing their wonderful gift shop, The Case Trading Post.  Here you will find a carefully chosen selection of hand-made Native American art, books on the subject, and assorted souvenirs.  I would recommend going to the museum and Trading Post on Saturday mornings to take advantage of their free lecture series: "Looking at Indian Art."  Deepen your understanding of Native American art while enjoying complimentary coffee and doughnuts.

Lyle Lovett at the Santa Fe Opera!

Lyle Lovett fans are in for a big treat: just a 10-minute drive from the Hacienda Nicholas Bed & Breakfast Inn is the Santa Fe Opera, where Lyle will be performing on Sunday, May 26, 2013.  Joining Lyle Lovett will be fellow Texan Robert Earl Keen, for a night of acoustic guitar, song and story-telling.  The two have known one another for 30 years, having met as students at Texas A&M.

Lyle Lovett, one of America's most beloved singer-songwriters, has recorded thirteen albums and won four Grammy Awards.  He is known for his quirky sense of humor, which is evident in his lyrics as well as his concert quips between songs.  Lovett's music blends elements of country, folk, swing, jazz, blues, gospel and Western for a memorable compilation of tunes.

Ticket prices range from $27-$89, and may be purchased online at or by calling 505.986.5900.  The Santa Fe Opera is fairly large, so I would definitely pay the extra money for a chance to see this engaging performer up close and personal.
